Spelling
At our primary school, we believe that spelling is a crucial element in helping children master the basic skills of writing. This belief aligns with the guidance set out in the new writing framework, which emphasises the importance of accurate spelling as part of a child’s overall writing development. We aim to ensure that all children are able to build fluency in spelling so that the cognitive load of writing is reduced. To support this, we use a programme called Cracking Spelling, which builds on the strong phonics foundations that children develop through Read Write Inc. By progressing from phonics to structured spelling instruction, we ensure that children continue to grow in confidence and accuracy in their written work.
Cracking Spelling encourages children to become curious and active learners by taking an investigative approach to spelling. Rather than simply memorising word lists, children explore and research spelling patterns, rules, and exceptions. This hands-on, discovery-based method helps them to make sense of the English spelling system and apply their knowledge independently across all areas of the curriculum. By fostering this investigative mindset, we aim to equip children with the strategies they need to become lifelong, confident spellers.
